My name is Helen, and I run Batch 17 Bakes from my home in beautiful Bicester, Oxfordshire. I have loved baking since I was a child, and am passionate about all things cake related. I absolutely love my job, and I’m also a total perfectionist, so you can rest assured that your wedding cake will be made by someone who really cares that it’s the best! All Batch 17 cakes are made totally from scratch, to order, from the best possible ingredients – nothing is from a packet or a box mix, so that your cake will be as fresh and delicious as possible for your big day. All our sponge cakes are triple layered and then filled with buttercream, and jam or curd for a truly delicious combination. Our cakes are then covered in either a decadent chocolate ganache or a delicious marzipan, underneath a silky smooth sugarpaste, for that extra special perfectly flawless finish! Our cake and filling flavour combinations are endless, so you can have exactly what you want for your big day. We work closely with all of our clients, helping to design the perfect centrepiece cake for your special day, and to make sure you get the cake you’ve dreamed of. All of our wedding orders start with a free consultation, where you can come and try some of our cake samples, and discuss your requirements. It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know each other, and for you to bring all your ideas with you so we can go through everything together, to come up with that perfect cake! We will work with you and your venue, throughout the order process, right up to personally delivering and setting up on the big day itself, so that you know your cake will be well cared for! What is your most memorable wedding?
I have to say, delivering to Blenheim Palace was definitely one of my highlights - it was a beautifully simple elegant cake, paired with the most beautiful flowers, and in this amazingly elegant setting it was just stunning! And driving right up to the front of the Great Hall felt like a real honour!
Describe your style in 5 adjectives.
Classic, romantic, elegant, clean, pretty.
What about your business are you most proud of?
The feedback I get from my customers - it's so lovely to hear from clients after an event, as often I don't see them on the big day, so for them to take the time to contact me after the wedding is amazing!
What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?
Be honest with your suppliers about your budgets, I would much rather design a cake I know is within your reach, than design something you love but maybe can't stretch to.
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
I love making personalised toppers for cakes, which include details about the couple that people really recognise! I've done everything from pets to bicycles so far, but the reaction they get is priceless!
Describe your typical process with a couple.
After initial email or phone contact, I like to have a consultation appointment with all my clients, where we can discuss what your ideas and requirements are - and you can try some cake flavours of course! After that I will take all those ideas, and design and quote for your cake, and send that over for your approval. Once a deposit is paid your cake is booked! I'll then contact you around a month before the wedding date to confirm any last minute details, and then your cake will be made and delivered to your venue!
What is your signature cake?
I'd say my Elegance cake is my signature, it's all one colour, but each tier is a different texture, which gives it a really understated elegance.
Describe how you got into making wedding cakes.
I've baked for as long as I can remember, but I started properly making detailed cakes for family birthdays over 15 years ago, and got the bug for decorating! After years of developing my skills and taking classes to get to a professional standard, and after making my sisters wedding cake, I took the plunge and finally opened Batch 17 Bakes. I love making wedding cakes - being a part of such an amazing process is such a joy! I get to make different works of art each week, that hopefully make each couples day a little bit more perfect, what's not to like?!
