  • At Cocoa & Whey Cakes, all our cakes, sweet and savoury, are designed and lovingly baked to order by passionate baker, Penelope Hurst in her home kitchen in the beautiful Hampshire village of Avington. Each cake is made using the finest ingredients including homemade preserves and fillings, light and creamy buttercreams, smooth ganaches made with high quality Belgian chocolate, and unusually delicious Swiss fondant. Wherever possible we source ingredients locally and we always use fresh, free-range eggs. Every cake is individually made with careful attention to detail and many hours are spent perfecting sugar flowers, piping details and ensuring that each cake looks beautiful and tastes delicious. Cocoa & Whey's kitchen is registered with Winchester City Council and has the highest 5 star hygiene rating. Penelope has also completed a Level 2 Hygiene Certificate.

Describe your typical process with a couple.
Your wedding cake should be both beautiful and extremely delicious for such an important day. We also think it should be made very personal to you and flavoured just the way that you want it. For this reason we ask all our couples to come in for a complimentary design and tasting consultation where you can have the chance to sample your requested flavours and a few others that we think you might like! The consultation appointment is also a good time to bring along any colour samples or other items that you wish to bring into the design of your wedding cake to make it really personal to you. Because we know that wedding planning is such a busy time we can arrange appointments during the weekend and evenings upon request. We can also arrange to meet couples at an alternative location.
Describe how you got into making wedding cakes.
Cocoa & Whey Cakes was set up by Penelope Hurst, a former solicitor, who, after years of baking cakes on request, decided to give up law and follow her definite passion for creativity and all things cake!
