The Cake Witch is a cake place with a difference. We don’t just bake, we don’t just decorate and we certainly don’t just make a nice a sponge (although we do make a very nice sponge). We live cake. We breathe cake. We dream cake. We are here to indulge all your sugary desires, from inception to ingestion, we want every second of your cakey journey to be epic. Like we said earlier, we do make a smashing sponge. But there is an awful lot The Cake Witch can do with a sponge! On our website you will find a list of some of the most popular flavours, but don't feel restricted; we have created flavours to honour the botanicals found in gin, recipes to suit gluten-free, grain intolerance and dairy-free plus adaptations of family favourites. One of the things that The Cake Witch really does enjoy and revels in (and actually sometimes does a little celebratory dance about) is that, where possible, we make our own jams and curds. Not only that (“there’s more than that?” I hear you gasp) we even grow, pick and forage our own fruits to make said jams and curds) We have a little kitchen garden that we grow all sorts of lovelies in, including all the edible flowers and herbs that we use to decorate our botanical cakes with. It is utter bliss and we enjoy every second of taking the flowers and fruits from the kitchen garden to the kitchen and using them to create flavours and decorations. We are also fortunate enough to be based in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and we are surrounded by fruit farms (very friendly ones), wild fruits, glorious flora and fauna and a general sense of natural beauty that inspires us every day to make our cakes as utterly gorgeous and representative of our surroundings as possible. The Cake Witch doesn't just make a pretty cake to look at, we go all out to give you the taste sensation your celebration deserves. What is your most memorable wedding?
All my weddings are memorable because they are all personal and special to the couple involved. All of them make me smile and feel proud and happy.
Describe your style in 5 adjectives.
Natural. Botanical. Unique. Floral. Delicious.
What about your business are you most proud of?
That I created it from nothing to something that is truly wonderful and brings happiness to so many.
What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?
Plan ahead! Suppliers get booked so far in advance (who knew a cake could be ordered two years in advance!). If you plan ahead you will get the supplier you want.
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
Garlands. I love natural garlands made from flowers and foliage. Think Beauty and the Beast, the final scene, I'm in wedding heaven!
Describe your typical process with a couple.
Usually my first point of contact is a facebook message or email. From there I gather as much basic information as possible: date, servings, style etc and offer a rough estimate. I then usually meet my couple to get to know them better and to decide the cake flavours and finalise the design. From there I create a contract with every detail listed for my couple to check over and agree to, if they are happy, then so am I and we then have a plan to create sugary wonderment!
What is your signature cake?
Woodland, rustic, botanical, foliage, florals, natural and garlands!
What is the most original creation you have baked for a wedding?
A golden pineapple.
Describe how you got into making wedding cakes.
Basically, I had always loved baking and cakes. I worked for BBC Good Food for years and from there my love of flavours and presentation developed. I reached a mid-life 'moment' and decided I wanted to do something that I had a true passion for so I enrolled in a cake school and learned the basics. From there I pushed cakes on to anyone and everyone who would take one, read everything I could, watched a million tutorials and then kept on experimenting and practicing. Other than the basics, I am entirely self-taught. That's what passion does! You never switch off: I have cake brain 24/7!
What would be your show stopper in the Great British Bake Off?
An edible forest with trees, toadstools, leaves, flowers and moss. I love moss.
