My name is Ben Carrick and I am a wedding photographer based in Leicester. I have been interested in photography for as long as I can remember although as a small child my fascination was mainly with cameras as opposed to the images that they produced. I was fascinated by my mother’s Canon AE-1 SLR camera because of the mysterious arrays of knobs and dials with unknown meanings so I learned a lot about the image controls that we still use today when I was around eight years old.
When I was a teenager I studied for my GCSE and A-Level qualifications in photography back in the days when we shot on 35mm and medium format film. I learned to develop film in an old fashioned darkroom and develop my own prints using light projectors and baths of different chemicals. Although the darkroom is lots of fun I have to say that I don’t miss it when it comes to my regular work. I fully embraced the dawn of digital technology as it allows wedding photographers an unparalleled freedom to work in low light situations, review their exposure settings and ultimately to guarantee our clients get the all important images from the big day, well lit, correctly exposed and beautifully composed every time.
As a wedding photographer you are always facing challenging situations, rapidly changing lighting conditions, moments that need to be captured in an instant and can’t be missed. You need to really understand the technical aspects of photography, to know your equipment inside and out and still be in the moment, watching for those special moments to capture and interacting with the people to make sure that all of your subjects are as relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera as possible.
I love working as a wedding photographer and I love the challenges that it presents. It’s a fantastic excuse for me to be shooting all sorts of subjects all the time as I need to be well practised in all kinds of situations so my work as a wedding photographer ultimately spills out in to all the other a
