Full Description
When I started my journey with wedding photography back in 2012 it was because through years of travelling I had developed a love of photographing people. Now, over 150 weddings into this wonderful career, I can say my love is of storytelling and creating beautiful images of your day that really capture the emotion and the essence of your wedding. Memories fade quicker than we care to admit and so in 10,15,20 years time I want you to be able to look through your photos and feel like you were right back there. My natural and relaxed style really appeals to people who 'don't like having their picture taken'. If that is you, you are not alone, far from it. I'll let you into a little secret, I don't like having my picture taken, so I know how you feel. Rest assured, you'll never be put on the spot, asked to pose awkwardly, or do anything that might take away from the natural relaxed feel of your day. Of course there is the odd time during the day that requires me to do a bit of directing, e.g. to capture the all important family photos, but even then it is kept very light and playful and in keeping with the happy mood so as not to make anyone feel singled out. For the most part, you won't even know I am there, some are even left wondering if I was there....until they see their photos of course! A key feature of my service if with all my packages you get two photographers included. The list of benefits this brings is huge but a few key ones to highlight are you will both have a dedicated photographer spend the morning with you (saves me madly rushing between you both and only doing half a job with each of you), you have a photographer front and back during the ceremony (saves me having to move conspicuously to capture different angles) and you have two sets of eyes (and cameras) capturing the day; that means more great images to choose from to make up your final collection!

Personal Message from the Manager

Name of Wedding Contact: Adam Hillier
Thanks for checking out my profile, I know there is a mind boggling amount of choice out there. I am always happy to have a non-committal chat to see if you think I will be a good fit for your day. Your photographers personality is almost as important as the images they take, after all you will spend most of your day with the photographer near by, so it's important you like them as a person. Feel free to drop me a message and we can schedule a call if you just want to fire some questions at me!

Adam and Steve captured our day perfectly
We booked Adam to be our photographer 2 years before our wedding date and I can't put into words how lucky we were to have found him. Right from the start he was easy and professional to deal with. On the actual day of the wedding, Adam came in and immediately it felt like we were with another friend on the room. He blended in and most of the time we barely knew either of the photographers were snapping away. He was easy to chat to and even my youngest son who is very shy absolutely loved him. Adam clearly took on board everything we had said in the day planner and both Adam and Steve captured our day perfectly and took shots naturally of everything we wanted and more. Now that we have received the photos they are absolutely stunning. They tell the story of our day perfectly. Anyone who is thinking of booking Adam at Hillier James, don't hesitate. He is truly amazing, professional and just a generally all round lovely person and I will be recommending him to everyone. Thank you so much.

Adam and Andrew have managed to capture our day perfectly, they joined in, were professional, and put everyone at ease meaning the photos we have are priceless. Can't recommend enough!
Adam was great on our Wedding day and (if possible) the photos were even better! Both him and Andy seemed to disappear into the background and really captured the day. Can't recommend enough.

We couldn't be happier with Hillier James!
We couldn't be happier with Hillier James Photography-our photos turned out more beautifully than I could have ever imagined. Winston and Adam were both a joy to work with, they went above and beyond and several guests assumed they were already-friends of ours because they got on so well with everyone at the wedding. I would whole-heartedly recommend Adam and Winston to any couple looking to capture their special day.

What is your most memorable wedding?

Wow, so many great ones; I guess one in particular stands out- I shot one at a family farm, which was in a stunning hill top location in Suffolk (yes there is the odd hill in Suffolk ha); they had smoke bombs as the adult favours and in unison roughly 100 guests let off different coloured smoke bombs; I got some great shots in the ten or so seconds before it just became a mad colourful happy melee of people running round blindly; it was followed by the most stunning sunset...what a day.

What about your business are you most proud of?

I guess it's not so much the business I am proud of; I am of course happy it continues to be successful but what I am really proud of is how many happy couples I have worked with and who have told me how much they love their photos. I am conscious to never forget just how important a wedding day is to people and everyone I shoot is special to me and I always strive to create something truly personal and beautiful for my lovely couples.

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Timings are crucial for making a wedding flow properly. Don't let the venue dictate the timings if they don't fit with your ideas for the day; just because the other few hundred weddings the venue have hosted followed a set time table doesn't mean yours has to. Many couples fall into the trap of having a short drinks reception after the ceremony which feels rushed, only to then have a two hour gap after the meal before the evening starts. As a minimum allow 1.5 hours for the drinks reception (2 hours is the sweet spot) and try and keep the after dinner break before the music to an hour maximum, so that the day flows nicely from one part to the next and doesn't allow the energy to drop before the dancing kicks off! I am more than happy to discuss your timings with you if you need guidance when planning your wedding, after all, we photographers are one of the only services that get to see the day from start to finish, so we know what works best in terms of timings and flow.

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

I'm a big fan of DIY wedding details and touches. Things that really convey who the couple are and what they are into, or anything home made. I am also a big fan of when people are not afraid to go very minimalist with their design. If you love details, go big with it, but if you don't, then don't be afraid to just go minimalist and elegant; as long as it represents you, you can't go wrong.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

I am fortunate these days that many of my couples find me through people they know or their relatives who's weddings I have shot. So when they enquire with me they are already pretty familiar with me and my services. From there we normally have several email exchanges and then normally a Skype or zoom call to chat in person. I have stopped travelling for meetings in a bid to make my business more environmentally friendly as with technology as it is these days there is little need for a physical meeting; a video call saves everybody time and saves the environment too. After paying a booking fee to secure their date, I then send couples a day planner form one month before the wedding so they can provide me with all the finer details about the day. At any time during the process I am more than happy to jump on a video call if they couple want to chat things over in more detail too.

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

This is where I don't have an answer as there is no one shot that should be preconceived before the day. There are lots of shots synonymous with wedding photography and in the due course of the day they are inevitably taken by us, but I don't think couples should get hung up on individual photos, unless it is a special request, such as a photo with such and such person who is very special to them.

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Embrace it! The weather is the one thing you cannot control, so try not to get to hung up over it. Have a contingency plan if it does rain of course, as will I, but just know that having it rain ALL day is pretty rare, so try not to worry. I have a plan for the day I follow to make sure I get the photos I need, but even that plan is fluid and can change to work in with the weather.

Describe how you got into photography.

Years of travelling with a camera. It started in the southern hemisphere when I was 18 and hasn't stopped since. I have taken pictures of tribes in Papua New Guinea, snowboarders and skiers in the Canadian Rockies and many stunning places in between. One resounding commonality in all that is I love taken pictures of people, so weddings was a natural progression for me.
