Michael Newington Gray Photography Full Description
I’m an modern and creative wedding photographer based in Whitstable, Kent and London. I’ve been involved in photography for over 15 years, and shooting weddings professionally since 2015. I shoot fun reportage imagery, mingling in with the guests and capturing all the excitement and nerves everyone feels in the morning; the awkward laughing at the in-jokes during the speeches and craziness as everyone lets their hair down at the party. I like to move around and create a narrative showing people having the fun times you will remember, rather than endless formal group shots, allowing you as much time to get involved in the most brilliant fun day of your life, with all your favourite people! I have shot weddings all over the United Kingdom, and beyond into Europe. I’m willing to travel anywhere in the world to capture your big day. Recently I've shot in Kent, London (lots of London, I lived there until recently), Devon, New Forest, Florence, Hampshire, Sussex, the home counties and many more. I love photographing fun people, whether it's in a stately homes, castles in foreign lands (or these lands - I mean come on - CASTLES!) , registry offices and lovely pubs. Wherever there's a good party. As well as UK weddings, I'm willing to travel internationally as well. I also offer an optional print and album service, using the best companies available to create timeless bespoke albums. Prior to wedding photography, I worked as a picture editor and photographer for over 10 years, many of those working for titles such as Vogue, Tatler, GQ, Glamour, House & Garden, Wired and many more.

Very friendly and was worth every penny.
We’ve been aware of Michael’s work before and knew when we were getting married he was the only photographer for us. He captured every moment of our easy-going day, was very friendly and was worth every penny.

By the end of the day Michael felt like a mate...
Michael was recommended to us by a photographer friend and we are so glad that we booked him. He was easy to deal with, clear, professional and friendly. He turned up promptly on the day and put us completely at our ease with his mix of relaxed friendliness and discreet professionalism. He entered into the spirit of the day completely and even joined us for the wedding breakfast which had not been part of our original plan and was a brilliant bonus. We loved his pictures, which really captured the spirit of the day, all the fun, laughs and the love we were given by everyone. By the end of the day Michael felt like a mate and I'm happy to say we are still in touch and consider him a friend.

The whole experience was such a pleasure
We are so glad we chose Michael to take our wedding photos.... we are happy that we decided to spend some money on a proper photographer, not only because the results are incredible, but because the whole experience was such a pleasure. Michael was brilliant at being unobtrusive but capturing loads of important moments without us really noticing he was there. He managed to get great shots of the notoriously camera-shy and captured the various stages of the day in a natural but very flattering way. When we were looking for a photographer we knew all the things we didn’t want (loads of shuffling around for big group photos, loads of formal set-ups, someone getting in the way during the ceremony), but hadn’t given much thought to what we actually did want. Luckily Michael completely got what we were looking for and captured the day perfectly. Everyone who has seen the photos has been blown away by how amazing they look, and we are so thrilled to have such a perfect document of our day.

It really feels like re-living the day

Michael was fantastic!
Although we were having a very traditional wedding, we knew from the very beginning we didn't want cheesy photos, we wanted them to be natural, beautiful and creative and that's exactly what we got. On the day, Michael was incredibly organised and worked brilliantly with our videographer and with all guests alike. He was there at the exact moments we wanted, without us even noticing and stayed to get some really fun party shots. My husband is not a fan of having his photo taken but Michael somehow made it a tolerable experience - even for him. A magician with a camera? We certainly think so.

He absolutely understood what we wanted
It was great having Michael as our wedding photographer, he absolutely understood what we wanted. He worked with us so well to get wonderful personal photos and then slipped into the background to capture the party and all it's atmosphere later on. His photos are stunning - we couldn't have asked for anything more!

Frequently Asked Questions
(9)

What is your most memorable wedding?

There are so many! I would have to say that a particular highlight was photographing in a castle just outside Florence in Italy last summer. Tuscan weather, good times and an opera singer belting out Nessun Dorma to a wild crowd - what a day!

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Modern, candid, relaxed, creative & friendly

What about your business are you most proud of?

How I've grown in the past few years! It was nerve wracking going full time freelance, but good reviews and recommendations have allowed me to build well on what I started.

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Plan the day how you want it, and relax! Everything will come together on the day, even if there are slight hiccups, getting married is as much fun as they say it is (I did it in 2015!).

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

There are so many! However I love little handmade touches - personal items relating to the couple.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

Once you've enquired, we arrange a time to meet up and have a drink and get to know each other a bit better (or we can do this via Skype if geography defeats us). It's good to get to know each other a little bit. If you're happy, you sign a contract a few days later, and pay a deposit and we're booked! Then, I can still help you with other aspects of your wedding, always an email or phone call away. I know a lot of awesome suppliers, so always happy to make recommendations and share knowledge. Around a month before the wedding I'll be in touch with a short form asking for some info to make the day go as smoothly as possible. Then I turn up to take amazing pictures of you looking amazing!

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

It could change per couple, but a handful of really classic beautiful couple snaps looking amazing is a great place to start...

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Relax! Indoors or out, you're surrounded by your favourite people and I can photograph them anywhere.

Describe how you got into photography.

A lifelong love of music got me into it as a teenager, which led to a photography degree. From there I ended up working in publishing/ journalism, mainly as a picture editor at Conde Nast for over 8 years (working on Vogue, GQ, Tatler, House & Garden, etc, etc). I shot so many events for my job (and still do on a freelance basis now) that eventually a friend asked me to shoot his wedding, then another, then another... I enjoyed it so much I turned it into a business and quit the day job.
