Leverhulme Hotel and Spa Full Description
This unique building was originally the Cottage Hospital for Port Sunlight Village, serving the needs of employees of Lever Brothers, and their families. It was opened in 1907 and operated as a hospital until 1950 when it became a residential conference and training venue for senior staff at Unilever. The building and grounds were acquired by Contessa Hotels in 2006 who extensively refurbished and extended the property whilst retaining the essential character of the building. Contessa's expertise created a finely tuned blend of classic and contemporary influences resulting in a stunning hotel which opened to critical acclaim following its restoration in 2008. Now a luxury 4 star hotel, Leverhulme's cool, classy architectural style is a beautiful mixture of art nouveau and art deco providing a supremely elegant setting for weddings and celebrations. Set in the heart of the world-famous garden village of Port Sunlight, Leverhulme Hotel is the ideal base to explore Port Sunlight as well as the surrounding coast and countryside of the Wirral Peninsula. The hotel is just a short drive away from Liverpool and Chester's most exclusive shopping, theatre and cultural attractions. We are licensed for Civil Ceremonies and Civil partnerships and have several spaces available for your big day, these include our magnificent Ballroom, Lower Ballroom and the Conservatory. You and your guests cannot fail to be seduced by the opulent luxury of the 23 contemporary bedrooms and suites. Our Coach House offers privately accessed accommodation with eight individually designed bedrooms. Our Games Room is an unusual and popular feature with an American-size pool table, poker table and lounge area. Guests can enjoy a game of pool or simply relax away from the hustle and bustle of the main hub of the hotel.

Such a beautiful venue for a wedding reception and party
Such a beautiful venue for a wedding reception and party. It was a beautiful Summers evening with tables and chairs outside but the steps out didn't have hand rails. Tricky! Luckily my husband helped me as he understands my M.S. The food was delicious with a proper hog roast. Mmm! I never knew that this place existed but I would like to visit it again.

Let down at the last minute
When we booked The Leverhulme we were extremely excited and absolutely loved the venue. It needed a lick of paint and some furniture repairs, but we were ensured this would happen. Then Covid meant that the venue closed for 18 months. Long story short - the week before the wedding we visited the venue and it was a complete tip - furniture from another hotel had been dumped there, including old fridge freezers. The main photo opportunity spot had been left to rot and there had been no decorative improvements done inside. (see photos attached) We were promised this would be rectified. The night before the wedding we went to decorate - absolutely no change. Plus, there was a broken window, glass everywhere outside, broken table, wrong chairs, dirty table cloths. The list was endless. The owner of the hotel arrived and the first words were “why am I here? What’s YOUR issue?” He was disgusting. I’ve never met such a rude man. He was rude to me, my mum, my husband, and even took a phone call half way through talking to my chief bridesmaid. On the day of our wedding he didn’t acknowledge me, and the bar - he was using ALDI’s own coke and lemonade out of warm bottles, and was selling bottles of Budweiser out of a multipack for £5 a bottle. He ruined my wedding reception. And never once apologised. I must say, my wedding ceremony was AMAZING and I cannot rate the venue - Church Farm, Wirral, highly enough. They were so kind and helpful. The view was amazing, there were chickens running around during the ceremony. It was perfect. And at the end of the day I got to marry my best friend, so we are trying not to let that rude man affect our memories of our wedding day.
